The Asian Leadership Conference (ALC) hosted by The Chosunilbo (Chosun Media) is South Korea’s premier international conference where global leaders come together to discuss and provide possible solutions for the pressing issues that Asia is facing today.     Samuel Kim, MPA, Harvard University, Founding President, CAL

    Samuel Hungsoo Kim is the President of the Center for Asia Leadership Initiatives (CALI). He is passionate about nurturing and empowering talent in Asia and runs over 50 programs annually in 32 Asian countries to help the region’s emerging leaders explore ways of being socially responsible as they face today’s complex challenges. His research and training focus on building social capital and trustworthy institutions; the effective use of power, authority, and influence; and negotiations, mediation, and confidence-building. To date, some 36,000 burgeoning and established leaders from the governmental, political, non-profit, and corporate spheres in Asia have benefited from his programs. He is a visiting faculty at the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Global Education, UN Academic Impact, and currently sits on the boards of three social-profit organizations. Samuel holds a Master’s in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government; a Master’s in International Cooperation from Seoul National University; and an LLB in Law, International Politics, and Economics from Handong University. He is the editor of ten books and regularly writes opinion pieces and editorials.

    Moshik Temkin, Professor, Harvard University

    Moshik Temkin, Associate Professor of History and Public Policy, joined the Harvard Kennedy School faculty in 2009. A specialist in the history of the modern United States in global and comparative perspective, with a focus on the connections between history and public policy, he is particularly interested in the interaction between Americans and non-Americans–the effects that American politics have had on the wider world, the roles that international politics have played in American society and policymaking in the United States, and the dynamics created when American and international politics come into contact, or conflict. At Harvard, he is affiliated with the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History, the Center for European Studies, and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. At the Harvard Kennedy School, he convenes the Harvard Seminar on History and Policy and is the co-founder and co-director of the Harvard Initiative on History and Public Policy. In 2010-2011, he co-convened the Harvard International and Global History Seminar. He received his B.A. at the Hebrew University and his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in History at Columbia University.

    Eugene Kogan, Faculty, Harvard University

    Eugene B. Kogan is the Research Director of Harvard University’s American Secretaries of State Project, which aims to crystallize diplomatic leadership lessons from 50 years of diplomacy by U.S. Secretaries of State, from William Rogers (1968) to Rex Tillerson (2018). An expert in coercive negotiations and power dynamics, Dr. Kogan has been teaching in Harvard Kennedy School’s Executive Education Program, Harvard Professional Development Programs, as well as at the Vienna Executive Academy, and the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po. His Brandeis University PhD thesis on nuclear negotiations won the Howard Raiffa Award for the year’s best doctoral paper on negotiation from Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation. Dr. Kogan’s latest work is the article “Art of the Power Deal: Four Negotiation Roles of Donald J. Trump,” just released in the Negotiation Journal, published by the Harvard Law School.

    Daria Istrate, MBA, Harvard University

    Daria Istrate has an extensive background in strategy, advising companies on cross-border acquisitions, mergers and restructuring in healthcare, energy and logistics. Over the past 10 years she has honed a deep expertise in the development and commercialization of life-changing cancer treatments and is currently working with Genentech based out of San Francisco. She founded a private education institution in her home country of Romania and is actively working on growing education investments in Eastern Europe. Daria is a champion of public-private partnerships and has worked with the World Health Organization and the World Food Program to bridge technology with investment to improve health and education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Daria has lived and worked on three continents and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a contributing member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program at Stanford University. Daria is an angel investor in several ventures in healthcare and logistics. She is interested in partnering with visionary entrepreneurial minds to bring innovative technologies to market.

    Richard Lum, Founding CEO, Foresight Vision Strategy

    Richard Lum is an academically trained futurist and chief executive of Vision Foresight Strategy LLC (VFS), a foresight and strategic analysis firm based in Honolulu. He has conducted foresight and strategy work on projects for organizations such as U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, U.S. Special Operations Command, the European Commission, the UK government, the Canadian government, the Singaporean government, NASA, and PepsiCo. Richard is the author of 4 Steps to the Future: A Quick and Clean Guide to Creating Foresight and his contributions were featured in the book Thinking about the Future: Guidelines for Strategic Foresight (2006), A Careful Revolution (2019, co-authored with Anne Gibbon), and Strategic Latency (2020, forthcoming). He has been published in the Journal of Futures Studies, the journal Futures, International Journal of System of Systems Engineering, World Future Review, and Small Wars Journal. Richard is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the futures studies program at the University of Hawai‘i. His dissertation research focused on developing a conceptual framework for designing future governance systems.

    Nishith Jain, MBA, IIM-Bangalore, Senior Director, ServiceNow

    Nishith Jain is a Senior Director at ServiceNow, a global cloud software company, and manages their Asia Pacific and Japan region as Head of Strategy, based in Singapore. Nishith’s work involves defining the strategic roadmap for ServiceNow, including accelerating financial growth, enabling the digital transformation journey of its customers, delivering great employee experiences, and helping its executive leadership team solve tough trade-off business decisions. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from National Institute of Technology, India, and his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore. Thereafter he joined Bain & Company, a management consulting firm, working at their Singapore, New York and New Delhi offices, and advising various C-level executives. Nishith is passionate about traveling, teaching and learning, especially on topics related to Asia and Technology – which he believes are two forces that are bound to drive the global agenda for decades to come. Having worked and lived across Asia, US and Europe, his world view has been enriched by his experiences working in a highly interconnected and interdependent world of business, society and policymaking; and underpinned with the immense potential of technology. Technology is indeed shaping all facets of life, including the future of work. Nishith is keen to witness this paradigm shift and is excited to be shaping some parts of the same.

    Ami Valdemoro, MPP, Harvard University, Leadership Coach & Social Entrepreneur

    Ami Valdemoro is an entrepreneur, leadership coach, health advocate, and social change agent. She is the Founder and Chief Empowerment Officer of Three Points Ventures, Inc., helping corporations and non-profit organizations with their leadership development, impact strategies, and execution. She is a Board-member of the social enterprises MyShelter Foundation and Liter of Light USA, which is dedicated to improving lives globally through community-built solar lighting technologies. Ami’s experience spans five continents, beginning with a tenure at the African Tobacco Control Consortium, a five-year program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the American Cancer Society’s global tobacco control unit. She was the Executive Director of Friends of Hope, a Philippine-based social business, and of Hands On Manila, a non-profit organization providing volunteer service opportunities. Since 2016, as a member of the teaching faculty at CALI, she has taught in over twelve cities in eight countries, reaching over 1,500 individuals. After graduating with honors from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Ami earned her Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.

    Umar Shavurov, UNDP, Harvard MPA

    Umar Shavurov is a Strategic and Change Management Consultant and Adaptive Leadership Trainer with over 15 years of experience in working with public and private organizations around the world. Umar brings intimate knowledge of implementing changes in world’s most difficult places as Liberia and Sierra Leone as well as advanced context as Singapore. Among his work in the field of Adaptive Leadership, Umar just completed a year long Leadership Programme, funded by German Technical Assistance Agency (GIZ), for mid and senior professionals from Central Asia tackling Climate Change issues in the region. He is also finalizing a ten-month long Leadership programme for 35 young participants in Kyrgyzstan to empower them to transform the country. More recently, he helped the Communications Team of the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS) at the National University of Singapore to map their strategic challenges and deploy their added value in overall university-wide transformational agenda. Umar is also a former Lecturer on Adaptive Leadership at the American University in Central Asia.

    Nupur Todi, Harvard Ed.M.

    Nupur Todi is a leadership development and change consultant who has worked in varied industries and sectors for over a decade. Her clients include Microsoft, Syngenta, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank, Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, Aegon Religare, Vodafone, Indian Hotels, and many more. She earned her M.Ed. in Human Development & Psychology at Harvard University and recently completed the High Performance Leadership course at IMD in Switzerland. She is a certified Facilitator, Assessor in the Caliper Leadership Profile and a Master Reiki Practitioner. Nupur’s career is dedicated to helping organizations build, engage, and involve leaders at all levels. When designing learning solutions, Nupur challenges traditional views of leadership development and embraces a holistic approach focused on preparing the workforce of the future. 

    Stefano Zordan, MA, Harvard University

    Stefano Zordan was born and raised in Piedmont, in the north of Italy. He then moved first to Ireland and then to Harvard to study at the intersection of Philosophy and Political Theory. At Harvard he encountered the framework of Adaptive Leadership, which resonated with him thanks to its systemic approach to complexity. He worked as a teaching assistant at the Harvard Kennedy School and then became a member of the Adaptive Leadership network. After working for some time at the United Nations in New York City, he moved back to Italy and created his own Adaptive Leadership NGO, Sistema Italia, which has been working with universities, companies, and the public sector to spread a more systemic vision of leadership. Stefano edited the Italian version of The Practice of Adaptive Leadership (2018). He is on the CALI teaching faculty and has taught in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

    Signo Uddenberg, CEO, Somos Stanford MSc.

    With a background in sustainable engineering and human-centered design, Signo brings balanced expertise to projects intersecting people, technology, and environment—specifically studying how environments affect how people feel, behave and perform, and vice versa. He leads the Innovation and Experience Design practices at MKThink, a San Francisco-based intelligent places firm. Previously, Signo was based overseas working in global infrastructure and food distribution development for Cintra and 2Seeds Network, respectively. He holds a BA in Natural Science from Pepperdine University, a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California and a MS in Sustainable Design & Construction from Stanford University, the latter of which he completed while becoming intimately connected with the d. school where he has continued to coach and develop programs related to design-thinking and human-centered design leadership. Recently he and his wife founded a casual fine dining restaurant in Quito, Ecuador, called SOMOS, which has consistently rate in the top 5 restaurants in the country and was written up in National Geographic.

    Christoph Frehsee, CEO, Tonies.com Faculty, Stanford University

    Christoph Frehsee is Lecturer at Stanford University and Co-founder and President of sustainable fashion and lifestyle brand, Amour Vert. His course at Stanford University, New Frontiers and Opportunities in Sustainability, focuses on exploring how companies, government, and non-profit organizations innovate and address some of the world’s most significant environmental and resource sustainability challenges. He has worked on insightful case studies with global companies as well as silicon valley start-ups in clean tech, policy, energy, transportation, consumer goods, agriculture, food, and sustainable built environments. Christoph received his MBA and MS in Environment and Resources from Stanford University in 2012 and his Diplom-Kaufmann degree from WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany in 2004.
